The Canadian government announced on October 18 that it has started a process to allow Canadian companies to apply for exemptions from tariffs imposed on electric vehicles, steel and aluminum products imported from China. The additional tax that the Canadian government plans to impose on imports of "key manufacturing" products from China will also be eligible for exemption.
According to a news release from the Department of Finance, the relevant relief policy is provided in consideration of the challenges that Canadian industry may face in adjusting the supply chain in a timely manner. The Canadian government said the surcharge exemption would need to be applied in "compelling" cases.
